Light items help homeowners live in a more pleasant space, says a blogger.
Buying a new sofa can help homeowners transform previously dark and gloomy rooms into bright and airy spaces.
Helen Green, writing for terrysfabrics.co.uk, says nobody wants to live "like a hobbit", in a dull property with little colour.
So the items, such as lounge room furniture, that are located within are the key to inspiring a light atmosphere.
"When you think about how the gloomy winters can make you unmotivated, tired and generally unhappy the last thing you want is to have a home that reflects it," she writes.
Perhaps the best way to avoid this is by splashing out on a lightly coloured leather sofa, although Ms Green accepts this is not within every budget.
If so, people should focus instead on changing smaller items in their lounge to add colour.
An article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch this week said creating a good level of comfort on a sofa is the key to a happy home life.
