Use bright sofa 'to add balance'

Red sofa 'perfect for Christmas'

An expert recommends adding colour to improve the balance of a lounge.

A brightly coloured sofa may be the perfect way to bring life to a room and balance other darker features.

David Ferguson, writing for YourHome.ca, suggests adding colour to a room is one of the first things to do when trying to improve its overall feel.

He notes the fireplace as an item that is traditionally dark, with the window its natural opposite - so brightening the window area with decorative lounge room furniture may be an option to take.

"Make sure that you use some of the same colour tones in the room, but be careful not to overwhelm," Mr Ferguson writes.

As well as a colourful sofa, other items that could be used to liven up a living space include chairs and display coffee tables.

On the other hand, Seane Roompl, writing for the Xzcution website this week, said dark furniture is the best bet for those hoping to add elegance to a living space.ADNFCR-2589-ID-19828083-ADNFCR
