Achieving good energy efficiency is a goal for many homeowners.
Investing in certain types of lounge room furniture could help homeowners achieve optimum energy efficiency.
Michael Holmes, spokesperson for the National Home Improvement Show, says installing a new boiler can be one of the most successful ways to drive down consumption of power in the home.
"Prices start from around £400 for a condensing boiler and homeowners can choose from gas, electric or oil fired," he explains.
However, simpler steps such as selecting lounge room furniture with energy usage in mind can pay dividends.
For example, a sofa that emits few harmful chemicals and retains heat could be a good long-term buy, as well as perhaps resulting in less electricity being required for warmth.
Alternatively, lightly coloured pieces of furniture may mean a smaller amount of power is needed to brighten a room.
Sainsbury's Finance recently noted a fifth of personal loans taken out in the first half of 2010 were to pay for home improvements, perhaps including new furniture.
