Lounge room furniture on the shopping lists of many homeowners.
Lounge room furniture may have been one of the many items Britons have forked out on this year in an effort to makeover their home.
A new Halifax survey has revealed 31 per cent of homeowners this year have purchased new furnishings at an average cost of £2,156.
For the 65 per cent of people who have redecorated their homes, the average spent on this task was £1,287.
The study also found more money is being spent on lounge room furniture and other DIY projects this year than the amount paid out in 2009.
New bathrooms and garden improvements have also proved popular with homeowners.
"Our research shows that more and more homeowners are picking up their brushes and paint and using their creativity to improve their surroundings, particularly in this market where we are seeing less house purchases," commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group Stephen Noakes said.
May's Nationwide house price index revealed the average house price last month stood at £169,162.
