Lounge room furniture 'should be secured for children'

Lounge room furniture accidents from poorly secured furnishings are common with children, it has been claimed.

Parents should make sure they secure their lounge room furniture to ensure children do not get injured, it has been claimed.

Gary Smith, director of the Ohio injury research centre, claimed that poorly fastened furniture - such as a chest of drawers - could result in serious damage or even death, the Associated Press reports.

According to Mr Smith, lounge room furniture owners should never put a toy or remote control on furniture in hard-to-reach places.

This could lead them to topple a piece of furniture, like a coffee table, as they try to reach it, he added.

Research carried out by the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio found that the most common form of furniture-related injury was a falling TV set.

Last month, writing for Sun Media, Anna Tham advised guardians to make sure heavy lounge room furniture items, including display cabinets, are anchored to prevent youngsters getting crushed.ADNFCR-2589-ID-19519180-ADNFCR
