Lounge room furniture buyers are more likely to look for value during the current economic climate, it has been suggested.
Those looking to buy furniture - such as a leather sofa or recliner - are affected by weather and prices, one expert has suggested.
Stephen Robertson, director general of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), said that strong sales figures registered in the retail industry in June and July were because of the hot weather and summer sales.
He remarked: "Most people are still very reluctant to spend on expensive household items - unless they're sufficiently discounted."
His comments come after the BRC and KPMG released its jointly published Retail Sales Monitor for August, showing a dip in furniture sales - which may include sofa beds and coffee tables - during the 30-day period.
According to Mr Robertson, sales are now "all about value and essentials".
Last month, the Age reported that furniture is one of the things that consumers may consider spending their money on as the possibility of a recovery looms.
