Furniture 'still doing well'

Wooden dining room furniture 'is new again'

Dining room furniture items could still be a popular purchase in the run-up to Christmas, it has been suggested.

People looking to splash out on new dining room furniture this Christmas - such as a dining table and chairs set - may be encouraged to hear that sales remain strong.

This is according to Richard Lowe, head of retail and wholesale at Barclays, who noted that while outlets are reporting a drop in demand on products like winter clothing, larger items - which could also include lounge room furniture - are still doing well.

He remarked: "Retailers of household goods continued to benefit from a growing appetite for big ticket items."

Mr Lowe went on to say that this type of product, like a sofa, lounge set or recliner, is being purchased now because of the impending VAT hike in the new year.

Lounge room furniture owners were advised that when VAT returns to 17.5 per cent on January 1st, this may affect sales on bigger buys, for example coffee tables or sofa beds.

Recent statistics from the British Retail Consortium and KMPG showed that furniture continued to be a popular option for shoppers in the capital last month.ADNFCR-2589-ID-19522641-ADNFCR
