Furniture 'helps drive biggest retail sales in 7 years'

Finding lounge room furniture for grey home may be priority

Sales on furniture items have helped to drive the best retail volumes in London for December since 2002.

The number of people purchasing furniture in London has helped to produce some of the best retail statistics for the city in December for the last seven years.

This is according to figures released by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), which found that like-for-like sales in the centre of the capital were 12 per cent higher when compared with 2008 numbers and were the best since 2002.

Big-ticket items including furniture did particularly well because of clearance sales, with this year's data a huge improvement on the 0.7 per cent volumes generated over the preceding 12 months.

"Wintry weather and less discounting than a year ago meant people made fewer shopping trips but it seems those that did get out spent more," the BRC stated.

It added that weakness in the pound has also encouraged interest from overseas, with Chinese tourists being highlighted as much more numerous than last year.

Last month, Richard Lowe, head of retail and wholesale at Barclays, said that large items such as furniture remained popular throughout December.ADNFCR-2589-ID-19564741-ADNFCR
